January 2016 Newsletter

January 2016

*Please remember, there is no student pick up or drop off in the school parking lots.

Happy New Year to our Southridge families and friends!  We hope that everyone had time to enjoy the break from the regular routine.

We had a busy fall and it looks like 2016 is continuing in the same way.  We ended the year with our Family Holiday Carol Sing, Class Plays by Rooms 8, 9 and 23,  our Kindergarten Open House, Southridge Talent Show, Toy Exchange, Candygrams and Pajama Day!  It was wonderful to see so many family members in to participate with their child in classroom activities and /or to see the special presentations that were planned. Also, our Toonies for Terry and Southridge Food Drive were very successful, and we thank you  for your caring and generous donations to both of these important causes.

Kindergarten registration is right around the corner as we look ahead, first term report cards will be arriving home for all students on February 19.

The character trait of the month for January is Hope.  This trait will be introduced at an upcoming assembly.

It’s time to think ahead to the fall!  Please be sure to tell your friends and family that Kindergarten Registration for the 2016-17 school year will be taking place at Southridge during the week of February 8 to 12. Parents of children born in 2012 or 2011 who are new to school should call 519 -576-0940 to arrange for a time to come into the school to register for our full day Kindergarten program.

School board policy mandates that when the temperature reaches -20°C with the windchill, the Principal or designate should make a decision as to whether to bring children in from outside, or to call for an indoor recess. We are also to take into account local conditions. Our school yard is more sheltered than some and has a lot of sunny areas and so we are more likely to send children outside.  With the cold weather, please ensure that proper winter clothing is worn to school including hats, mittens or gloves, snow pants and boots.

Parents with children in Senior Kindergarten can now register their child for Grade 1 French Immersion using the on-line registration system at www.wrdsb.ca  To find out about French programs, please visit www.wrdsb.ca/french or call 519 570 0003 x4277
